Warren Sapp declares bankruptcy…how did it happen?

How do you go from earning millions to bankruptcy? Just ask Warren Sapp, Terrell Owens, Allen Iverson or Dennis Rodman. They will have different stories with similar sad endings. Back in the day when athletes did not have faniancil planners at their disposal it might have been understandable but now it just seems pitiful, but it is hard to pitty millionaires who squander their fortunes when ther are so many people living on far less and making ends meet. Read the linked story and share your thoughts. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/early-lead/post/warren-sapp-the-latest-multimillionaire-athlete-to-file-for-bankruptcy/2012/04/09/gIQAErXz5S_blog.html

Why would Plaxico Burress blast his former coach and the Giants fans?

Plaxico Burress spent 2 years in prison for shooting himself. He was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and he was punished for the crime. Some say the punishment did not fit the crime, and I must say I am in that camp, but he is out now and he has signed with the New York Jets. He is 34 years old and given a second opportunity at glory, but he is still mad. Burress feels like he did not get any support from the Giants during his ordeal, and he lets them have it in the October issue of the Men’s Journal, but why? What did he expect? A player is only good to the organization when he is playing. When he is making money for them. When a player gets in trouble he will learn the definition of lonely. Those fans that used to cheer for you are gone, your teammates are gone and the coach is gone. Not everyone will encounter this kind of abandaonment, but just take a look at Tom Coughlin does he really look like the kind of guy that would be visiting you through a plate glass window? Burress has a right to be disappointed, but don’t dog or mock the fans that never turns out well. Channel that anger toward the right people and don’t forget you are 34 and got a second chance give Tiki Barber a call and you will realize just how blessed you are. http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/plaxico-burress-blasts-tom-coughlin-eli-manning-in-explosive-interview-090911

Michael Irvin on cover of Out magazine

Michael Irvin opens up about his gay brother in Out magazine, but why the sexual cover? http://www.foxsportssouthwest.com/msn/07/12/11/Cowboys-great-Irvin-opens-up-to-gay-maga/landing_cowboys.html?blockID=538304&feedID=3742&GT1=39002&

Adrian Peterson Said He Feels like a Slave

“Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson made some controversial comments about the NFL labor situation in an interview with Doug  Farrar of Yahoo’s Shutdown Corner. The interview was conducted just before the NFLPA decertified. “It’s modern-day slavery, you know? People kind of laugh at that, but there are people working at regular jobs who get treated the same way, too. With all the money,” Peterson continued. “The owners are trying to get a different percentage, and bring in more money.”* I am so sick of athletes comparing their plight to the plight of slaves. People could live a comfortable life  if they were paid the league minimum $285,000, and the superstars make millions. So let’s not equate their labor negoiations to Kunta Kinte. They need to eliminate the slave references all together. Millions of Americans are unemployed and underemployed, and they don’t want or need to hear athletes whining about their plight as they sip soup out of their silver spoons.

Teflon Brett Favre Faces 2 More Accusers…why are they talking now?

Today I was dismayed while watching Morning Joe the dismissive tone they took while discussing Brett Favre’s latest sexual misconduct allegation. The biggest question they had was not did he do it, but why now? Christine Scavo and Shannon O’Toole were massage therapist hired by the New York Jets and they have accused Favre of making unwarranted advances at them, and when they informed the Jets they were told they would never work for them again and to keep their mouths shut. So why would they keep quiet for this long and now file. Simple…now is the time. Favre was NFL royalty and they take care of their superstars. He is now simply a defeated old man who is of no use to the NFL and now he can be thrown to the wolves. Even though Favre might have been the creator of these wolves. These women are workers and workers have a hard time getting their story out when a man is powerful and he has an even more powerful organization standing behind him. At this point we do not know if the allegations are true or not but they deserve to have their day in court and not simply be dismissed as two nobodies trying to make a buck.

Why Was Randy Moss cut by the Minnesota Vikings?

A few weeks ago Randy Moss was traded from the New England Patriots to the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings are not having a very good season this year and Moss has not fit into their system. Yesterday he attended the news conference after the team loss and he had a lot of attitude. He let it be known that he was attending the conference under duress and he said in the future he will ask and answer his own questions. He had already been fined by the NFL for not attending a previous press conference. I watched him and said to myself why would he act like this? He is an African American male millionaire, but what he semingly forgot is that he too works for someone, and that is the NFL. So today the Vikings cut him from the squad so I guess he won’t have to deal with the pesty media after all.

T.O. and Ochocinco…Dynamic Duel or Double Trouble

It is hard to believe that anyone would believe that Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco could possibly share the same side of the football field, but obviously the Cincinnati Bengals believe it can be done. With the addition of TO they had two of the biggest egos in football vying for playing and camera time. Last year TO behaved himself in Buffalo but he also had a somewhat lackluster season. Owens is more of an issue when he does catch the ball and at 36 he is approaching the backside of his career, and his grasp for glory is reaching the point of desperation. Sportswriter Jay Marriotti said “It will be comical enough watching them demand the football, leaving one to pout when the other guy is getting more touches or the other to mope when he isn’t catching the winning touchdown pass. But if we’ve learned anything through the years from these hopeless attention hogs, it’s that they’re entertainers first who inevitably will vie to have the most Twitter followers, pull off the more discussed end-zone stunts and, frighteningly enough, attract the higher ratings in their back-to-back reality shows on VH1.” Well said. Tell me what you think. Are they gifted athletes or just glory hounds?

Why does Dallas Cowboy Dez Bryant Refuse to Honor Tradition?

NFL rookies carry water, pads, buy dinner they pretty much do whatever the veterans tell them, but not Dez Bryant. He has refused to carry the pads for veteran Roy Williams. This kind of hazing is the norm within the league. So why is the rookie brizzling at doing it? Bryant who has not played one down of NFL ball has already had his share of problems. “First came the suspension from Oklahoma State followed by his slide in the draft. Then came the stories of his revealing his father to be a pimp in pre-draft talks which led to comments about his mother followed by stories of her arrest charges. Now it has come out that Bryant already lost an endorsement deal with Under Armour.”* So one might think he would not want to bring any more negative attention to himself. My question is what do you think. Should this practice be outlawed by league or is this just playing your dues? Is he simply being another spoiled athlete who has no real respect for the game and its traditions?

Super Bowl 44 Did Not Disappoint

First of all while I am a fan of President Obama I do not want to hear him discussing policy of the day of the big game. Each network that host the Super Bowl uses it as an opportunity to hype all of their shows, and this was an opportunity for CBS to showcase Katie Couric at our expense.  It is fine to interview the commander and chief but keep it light we came to have fun. The interview with Plaxico Burress was also somber but it was relevant. Burress was a participant in the Super Bowl two years ago and now he is a prison inmate so it was interesting to see him go from a celebrated athlete to a repentant prisoner. CBS Jim Brown also did a piece on the residents of the 9th Ward. When we listen to the New Orleans Cinderella story we would think the entire city has experienced a rebirth, but that is simply not true and I was glad to see the piece on the residents of the 9th Ward. That section of the city looks like Katrina was yesterday. So it was a good move to give them opportunity to talk about that part of the city and not just the remodeled Dome.  All of these was important moments but it was a great game and I was happy to see the Saints win. So now they can say “Who Dat? Won That!”

NFL Network’s Warren Sapp Sidelined on Domestic Violence Charges

NFL Network personality and former professional player Warren Sapp was arrested in Miami on domestic violence charges. He allegedly physically removed his girlfriend from his hotel room. She had visible marks around her neck and other bruises. Sapp’s explanation was he wanted her out of his room because he was going to have company.  Sapp was subsequently arrested and he will not be appearing on the NFL Network Super Bowl coverage. If the charges are proven to be true Sapp is just the latest in a number of high profile people accused or convicted of domestic violence. At this point Sapp is innocent until proven guilty. Charlie Sheen was charged with domestic abuse back in December and he has been able to resume his career while he awaits adjudication.  That always struck me as unfair. Sheen is star of one of CBS most popular sitcoms and there was never any thought given to suspension of the show pending the trial, but Sapp will not be that lucky today. He will be sidelined and rightfully so. My only question is why don’t all high profile people receive the same treatment?
