“Runaway General” McChrystal keeps his eyes on the “Wimps in the White House”

General Stanley McChrystal has been summoned to Washington to explain statements that he and his staff made to Rolling Stone magazine. In an article that will be on the newsstands on Friday McChrystal criticized the president and took pot shots at the Vice President. When asked about Vice president Biden one of his aides replied you mean “bite me”. McChrysal said that he voted for the president, but they have yet to really connect, and he said the president was woefully unprepared for their first meeting. The article also claims “McChrystal has seized control of the war “by never taking his eye off the real enemy: The wimps in the White House.” So this is the top commander in Afghanistan making disparaging remarks about the commander in chief. One of McChrystal’s aide used the term “wimps in the White House”, but their attitude reflects the attitude of their leader, and if that’s the case McChrystal’s got to go. This is something that does not have to go on. You can’t talk about your boss and his team like this and expect to keep your job, and McChrystal should not be surprised if he loses his.

Let’s Celebrate the F-Word

I was going to leave this alone, but I simply can’t. When Vice President Joe Biden introduced the president after the healthcare victory he dropped the f-bomb.  Initially the president acted like he didn’t really hear him, but since that time this event has become cause for celebration. Some call the language colorful while I still call it profane. People have a right in this country to say whatever they want, but at a presidential press conference I would think the language would rise beyond the street. Some will say he did not know his comment was audible. I’ll accept that, but now the Democrats have immortalized it with this tee shirt which is selling out. So parents will proudly where this tee shirt and tell their children what it means. Some will say give me a break kids hear these words everyday, and while that might be true I would never buy a tee shirt that celebrates the profane. It is simply another symptom of people in Washington saying whatever unfiltered thought rolls through their heads, and now people are willing to shell out cash to broadcast those thoughts to a wider audience.

President Obama Reminds John McCain the Campaign is Over

I am not going to pretend that I watched the entire healthcare summit, but I did see this. It is good to see the president reminding the Republicans that the campaign is over. John McCain wanted to take the opportunity to reestablish his status as the maverick. He is in the political fight of his life and he wanted to appear tough, but the president gently reminded him we as a nation are no longer in campaign mode, but governing is what we all should be doing. This is the Barack Obama I voted for and hopefully we will see more of him.

Is It Even Possible for Members of Congress to Reach Across the Aisle?

Last week former Senator Charles Mathias (R-MD) died. Yesterday there was a memorial service for him. Vice President Biden said the following, “I never thought of Mac reaching across the aisle. I thought of Mac as never even recognizing there was an aisle. I never thought of Mac as having to go out of his way to reach across. It was who he was. There was no artificial divide; there was only principle to Mac.”  When I read this I was struck by the poignancy of the sentiment and saddened by the fact that this kind of senator would have no place in the current Congress. This was a Republican Senator who “championed landmark civil rights legislation and bucked his party in opposing the Vietnam War. In the 1970s and 1980s, he marched for women’s rights with Gloria Steinem and Bella Abzug, called on Richard Nixon to tell the truth about Watergate and pushed unsuccessfully for public financing of congressional campaigns.” There is no room for this kind of legislator in this current political climate. Each party seeks to demonize the other. No one wants to give an inch and we are the people that suffer from this incredible inability to compromise. It will be interesting to see what will be said of the current members of Congress when they are eulogized? What they fail to remember is their actions now will dictate what is said about them when they lay silently forever, and at this point they will not be remembered this way.

Saying No is Not Leadership

Last night during the State of the Union President Obama extended the olive branch to the Republicans. The Democrats no longer have their super majority so in order for anything to get done the Republicans are going to have to be a part of the process. They can’t just say no, and the Democrats can no longer try to push their own agenda.  This is a time to really discuss what is the best way to help the American people. Washington is going to finally have to do something for the people that elected them. President Obama said every day should not be Election Day, and that is what this feels like. it reminds me of the movie Groundhog Day where we just keep repeating the same day everyday.  The definition of insanity is doing the same thing the same way and expecting different results. It simply is not going to happen. Change can not happen until people are forced to change, and as we look at the unemployment rate skyrocketing it is clear America needs a change. My prayer is bipartisanship will not just be a word in the dictionary, but become the way Washington does business.

Bill Clinton Says, Hey Barack I’ll Take Cream With that Coffee

The former president did not actually say this, but according the new book Game Change by John Heilmann and Mark Halperin, Clinton expressed this sentiment. During the 2008 presidential campaign Bill Clinton was trying to get Sen. Ted Kennedy to support his wife and he said  “a few years ago, this guy would have been getting us coffee.” The guy he was referring to was Barack Obama. I find this statement far more offensive than the comment attributed to Senator Harry Reid. In fact this statement was a tipping point for Kennedy who was already leaning toward Obama. I am going to take the high road and assume that when Clinton made the statement he was referencing the fact that the candidate was a junior senator. The other road would indicate a racist mindset which suggest as a black man Obama would be more suited to waiting on them then being the president.

Is it Us Against Them or Us Against Us?

On Christmas Day a terrorist tried to detonate a bomb on an airplane. Fortunately he was inept and his attempt was unsuccessful. Since that time we have witnessed finger pointing. Former Vice President Cheney has said the president is soft on terrorism. This has been echoed by his fellow Republicans. Isn’t funny that when Cheney was in office he spent most of his time in an undisclosed location but now he is ready to jump in front of any live microphone for a chance to berate the new commander in chief?  Yesterday we saw a new side of our president. We got a glimpse of an angry president. One CNN reporter referred to his reaction as “smoldering”. He admitted our intelligence community had failed to connect the dots and it was their fault. So he pointed the finger at them.  So we’ve got the Republicans pointing a finger at the Democrats, the Democrats pointing back. Both parties calling each other names. What are the terrorists doing while we are pointing the finger at each other? Laughing at us and planning their next attack.

Don’t Call them White House Party Crashers, Call Them Criminals

Today we learned that a couple, Tareq and Michaele Salahi,  breeched security and attended the White House State Dinner. This is the first time something like this has happened. How could this happen? According to NBC Brian Williams they tried to enter one of the entrances and they were turned around. They then entered the pedestrian entrance. How did they get through? They looked like they belonged. They were dressed appropriately and they had the right swagger, but what else? This couple managed to take pictures with Vice-President Joe Biden and they had the nerve to post them on their Facebook page. They are being called party crashers, but that simply seems a little too cute. These people are criminals there is nothing cute about this. Assassination attempts are up 400% since President Obama took office. This is a security breech and some heads need to roll on this one. This is simply unacceptable.

Vice President Biden Says Stay off Planes and Trains, but That is Impossible for Most Americans

Vice President Biden said on the Today Show this morning that he would advise people to stay off of plains and trains during this swine flu epidemic. That might be possible if we all had a driver to take us from here to there, but what do the millions of people do who depend on public transportation? The subways and buses are full because the working people depend on them to get them to work. So do you stay home until the flu becomes dormant? People don’t use public transportation because they want to the use it because they have to work, kids have to go to school and people have to travel on planes for business. So before a political figure appears before the camera he needs to make sure his talking points reflect how the real world lives.

Should Joe Biden Apologize for being Joe Biden?

Last week the Chief Justice completely messed up the oath of office during the Inauguration ceremony. A few days later Vice-President Biden made a joke regarding the flub. The look on President Obama’s face let everyone know he was not amused. It was the look a parent gives a child who is misbehaving and that child knows this is not the end of the matter. We have since learned that the vice president has apologized to the Chief Justice, but why? It was not funny at the time, but bottomline is it was funny and most Americans have chuckled over the fumble. If anybody should be apologizing it should be the Chief Justice for trying to wing it. On an occasion that important he needed to bring his cheat sheet. Keep in mind this was his first time adminstering the oath and he should have been prepared. Vice-President Biden appeals to the average joe and the average joe found the humor in the situation.
