Why the Erin Andrews trial should matter to everyone

Erin Andrews is a celebrity, but she is also a victim. She was recorded getting out of the shower in a hotel room by a stalker. He manipulated the peephole on her door and recorded her. The tape is on the Internet forever. She is suing the hotel and yesterday the hotel’s attorney took an interesting approach. He asked her about how her career and income has increased since the incident. He listed the endorsement deals that she has acquired. So where is he going with this line of questioning? Is he saying she has benefited from the tape or is he saying that her career has not been negatively impacted? Both thoughts are equally repugnant. Let’s look at what Andrews did. She checked into a hotel and took a shower. That’s it. We all have done it and once you give your hotel room the cursory look around you put the lock on the door and foolishly feel safe. Andrews is a sportscaster, game show host, celebrity, but more importantly she a woman who has been victimized by a stalker, and when you listen to the current line of questioning you wonder will she be victimized by the system.

Is Cam Newton the new face of the NFL?

Super Bowl week we saw Cam Newton flash his million dollar smile. He was voted the NFL MVP Saturday night, and his Carolina Panthers had a brilliant season. He was sitting on top of the world but after being defeated in the Super Bowl his world crumbled. He did his post game press conference with a chip on his shoulder. Defeat is never easy or welcome, but there are winners and losers, and people have got to learn how to accept defeat. Some NFL commentators tried to excuse his behavior. They said he left before he said the wrong thing, but Newton is a grown man and he is capable of not spewing out anything that might torpedo his career. If Newton wants to be the face of the NFL he is going to have to develop a thicker skin. Peyton Manning has won the Super Bowl, and he has also experienced the agony of defeat, but he stood at the podium and answered the hard questions. If Newton is going to be the face he is going to have to learn how to do that too.

Why is Cam Newton defending himself?

Cam Newton is an exciting quarterback. He attacks the game with joy and he is not shy about celebrating, but some are bothered by his antics. Watch the clip and share your thoughts.

We knew Greg Hardy beat up his girlfriend, but why are we appalled when we see the photos?

Dallas Cowboy Greg Hardy beat up his girlfriend, but he is still in the NFL. He has been playing and the team stood by him, but Friday photos were released showing his brutality. Sports pundits are feigning indignation in light of the pictures. So his actions only became real when we could see them? Ray Rice knocked his fiancee out and got a 3 day suspension, but when the tape was released so was he. Chris Brown brutalized Rihanna, and when those photos were released he became the poster child for domestic violence. So its like when a tree falls in the forest an no one hears it did it really happen or matter? If we don’t see it even though the details are all there on the police report we are not convinced until we see the bruises. What does that say about us?

Cleveland Cavaliers Owner Dan Gilbert is Smiling While He Eats His Words

The Cleveland Cavaliers are in the NBA Finals. Lebron James has taken this cast of characters on his back and placed team on the big stage. They wondered in the wilderness while James took his talents to South Beach. Owner Dan Gilbert put the “Celie” Color Purple hex on James when he left. Gilbert pointed his finger at James and said “until you do right by me every thing you touch”…well you know the rest. No, this is not a quote from Gilbert you will find his words below, but last night 5 years later he was all smiles. Yes, you can go back home and yes for the right price the owner will welcome you with open arms.
2010
Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert posted this letter on the team’s website after LeBron James’ announcement he was leaving for the Miami Heat.
Dear Cleveland, All Of Northeast Ohio and Cleveland Cavaliers Supporters Wherever You May Be Tonight;
As you now know, our former hero, who grew up in the very region that he deserted this evening, is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier. This was announced with a several day, narcissistic, self-promotional build-up culminating with a national TV special of his “decision” unlike anything ever “witnessed” in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment. Clearly, this is bitterly disappointing to all of us.

The good news is that the ownership team and the rest of the hard-working, loyal, and driven staff over here at your hometown Cavaliers have not betrayed you nor NEVER will betray you. There is so much more to tell you about the events of the recent past and our more than exciting future. Over the next several days and weeks, we will be communicating much of that to you. You simply don’t deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal.

You have given so much and deserve so much more.In the meantime, I want to make one statement to you tonight:
“I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER ‘KING’ WINS ONE” You can take it to the bank.

If you thought we were motivated before tonight to bring the hardware to Cleveland, I can tell you that this shameful display of selfishness and betrayal by one of our very own has shifted our “motivation” to previously unknown and previously never experienced levels. Some people think they should go to heaven but NOT have to die to get there. Sorry, but that’s simply not how it works.

This shocking act of disloyalty from our home grown “chosen one” sends the exact opposite lesson of what we would want our children to learn. And “who” we would want them to grow-up to become. But the good news is that this heartless and callous action can only serve as the antidote to the so-called “curse” on Cleveland, Ohio.

The self-declared former “King” will be taking the “curse” with him down south. And until he does “right” by Cleveland and Ohio, James (and the town where he plays) will unfortunately own this dreaded spell and bad karma.

Just watch. Sleep well, Cleveland. Tomorrow is a new and much brighter day….

I PROMISE you that our energy, focus, capital, knowledge and experience will be directed at one thing and one thing only: DELIVERING YOU the championship you have long deserved and is long overdue….

Dan Gilbert

Johnny Manziel has entered rehab and “Johnny Rehab” is trending on Twitter…this says more about us than him

ESPN announced Johnny Manziel, Cleveland Browns quarterback has entered rehab. Manziel has showed a lot of bravado in college and in the NFL. Unfortunately he has not lived up to the hype, but he has done his share of partying. He obviously recognizes the need for a change, but the Twitter world has dubbed him Johnny Rehab and the jokes have been frequent and often cruel. It is so sad to see the lack of compassion. In this age of social media dominance it is sad to see that few have 140 characters of compassion for a young man who now seeks to change his path.

Deflategate and what it teaches us about cheating

We have been talking about Deflategate all week. By now most people know the Patriots were caught with 11 deflated footballs and no one knew how they got that way. The thing that has been so interesting is watching people rationalize cheating. How many times have you heard a newscaster say “they would have won anyway”. So this was really no big deal. So would it have been a big deal if the score was closer? So rules only matter under certain circumstances? If that is true then why have rules? Last night the question was posed on Twitter “how do you explain Deflategate to children?” Some laughed off the question, but is it really funny? Are we really comfortable telling the next generation cheating is good as long as you don’t get caught. Share your thoughts.

Bill Belichick Meets the Press and Says Absolutely Nothing

Bill Belichick speaks for about 14 minutes and he insists he had absolutely no knowledge concerning “Deflategate”. He says he knows nothing about he deflation of the balls. He says the NFL is investigating. This is much adieu about nothing. Yes, the Patriots broke the rules, but nothing is going to happen pre Super Bowl. This is the news story of the week. What do you think? Share your thoughts.
