Will the new Congress change anything?

The Republicans will control the Senate and the House. Will anything change? Simple question. Share your thoughts.

The North Carolina Lunch Lady is committed to feeding hungry children

This story appeared on the CBS Nightly News last night. After the debacle we witnessed over the last few weeks in Congress it was good to see a story that spotlighted the good in this country.

Tea party congressman Allen West Rips Into DNC Chair…did he overreact ?

Rep. West became upset with DNC Chair Debra Wasserman-Schultz when she

said the following on the House floor, “The gentleman from Florida, who represents thousands of Medicare beneficiaries, as do I, is supportive of this plan that would increase costs for Medicare beneficiaries. Unbelievable from a member from South Florida.” West fired off an email showing his contempt for the DNC chair. He said Look, Debbie, I understand that after I departed the House floor you directed your floor speech comments directly towards me. Let me make myself perfectly clear, you want a personal fight, I am happy to oblige. You are the most vile, unprofessional and despicable member of the US House of Representatives. If you have something to say to me, stop being a coward and say it to my face, otherwise, shut the heck up.” So did he overreact to her comments? Tell me what you think.

Term Limits for Congress, is this a good idea?

I wholeheartedly endorse term limits for Congress. One of the problems with Congress is they go there and simply stay too long. They start thinking more about amassing power than the people they were sent there to represent. The president can only serve two terms. Senator Jim DeMint is pushing for an amendment to put term limits on length of service. I think it is a great idea. Tell me what you think.

Was Rep. Keith Ellison fake crying?

A couple of days ago I watched Rep. Keith Ellison address the Homeland Security Committee on the issue of Radicalization of the American Muslims. Ellison shared an emotional story of an American Muslim who sacrificed his life helping fellow Americans during 9/11. As Ellison related the story he was reduced to tears. It was some very emotional testimony. Today I read the attached article regarding that testimony and the writer contends the tears were fake. He goes on to call them the “tears of a clown”.  The Daily Caller tends to be the news tailored to the far right, but really is everything fair game. Is everything political. This just seems mean spirited and not based on facts.

Is Sheila Jackson-Lee the boss from hell?

Working in Washington is hard work but according to the story attached working for Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee is impossible. Jackson-Lee is accused of giving her staffers profane nicknames and also reserving some of her more horrific behavior for her black staffers. The story I reference is from the Daily Caller, a conservative website. Our elected officials are supposedly there to serve us, but who really oversees their behavior. What recourse does a staffer have other than to quit? Sadly, they really don’t because as Jackson-Lee says she is the queen and no one can cross the queen and keep their job.

Republicans and Democrats vow to sit together, but can they work together?

Over the past few days we have heard various  members of Congress vow to sit next to members of their opposing parties at the State of the Union address. This is a visual show of bipartisanship. This is nice, but don’t we want for them to be more than polite seat mates? We are in the midst of an economic crisis and we need for them to reach a real common ground. Yes it will make for great theater Tuesday night and great conversation Wednesday on the morning shows, but when they enter the chamber will they even remember who they shared an armrest with Tuesday night?

What is the Dream Act, and why does it matter?

They say as you get older you become more conservative. I used to doubt this statement but now I know there is some truth to it. Today as I read the Washington Post an article caught my eye, Undocumented Youths Chasing a Dream”. Well, I’m all for youth chasing their dreams, but after reading it I might have some trouble with this. The title of the act before Congress is Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act. So what this will do is provide the legal papers for undocumented immigrants who were brought here by their parents when they were children. This bill would provide a pathway to legalization for immigrants who sign up for two years of college or miltary service. These same illegal immigrants will be eligible for financial aid. The same financial aid that is currently becoming more and more illusive. So tell me is this really something we as a country can afford to do? Does citizenship really have its privileges? My children are approaching college age. They will have to compete for scholarships and grants. Should our children have to compete against citizens and non-citizens? Tell me what you think.

The Andy Harris Attack Ad that Aims Way below the belt

It is truly that time of the year. As the November election gets closer every other television ad is a political ad. Most of them seem like white noise, but some do command your attention and one of them is an attack ad against Frank Kratovil. The ad shows a chorus line with the heads of President Obama, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Maryland Congressman Frank Kratovil. They are all depicted as dancing girls. The point is that Kratovil is in step with their spending ways, and obviously this is one of the more despicable ways that the makers of the commercial could illustrate the point. I have seen this ad a number of times and last night I saw the producers of this “masterpiece”. It is brought to you courtesy of the Commision on Hope, Growth and Opportunity. An outside agency sponsoring an attack ad. This is nothing new, but it is worth mentioning. Sadly, attack ads do get you attention. This one got mine, but for all the wrong reasons. Follow the link below for a very interesting article on campaing ads subsidized by outside groups: ttp://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/bs-md-anti-kratovil-ad-20101004,0,2897405.story

Should a Congressman’s Address Be Posted on a Website?

This morning I was reading a Washington Post article, Health-care protest site: Ohio congressman’s house by Krissah Thompson. Rep. Steve Driehaus voted yes on the healthcare bill and a group of protesters picketed in front of his home. Driehaus is a Democrat who lives in an area that is adjacent to some Republican strongholds. Minority Leader John Boehner in response to Driehaus’ yes vote said, (Driehaus) “may be a dead man. He can’t go home to the west side of Cincinnati.” In typical Republican fashion Boehner said his analogy was political not literal because of course he was not condoning violence, but even if you disagree with the vote does a voter have the right to picket a lawmaker’s home. In an effort to get people to attend the protest the congressman’s address, as well as a map and a best place to park information was published on protest leader’s website.  There is something wrong about this. Let’s look at a typical manager who from time to time has to fire an employee. What if that former employee showed up on the doorstep of the employer? What would he do? The employer would call the police and the ex-employee might be arrested for stalking or harassment well what is this? It is harassment. When the Congressman is in Washington he is at work and when he is at his home with his family he should not be harassed by angry zealots. This is not an act of patriotism this is more like an act of terrorism.
