Is Cam Newton the new face of the NFL?

Super Bowl week we saw Cam Newton flash his million dollar smile. He was voted the NFL MVP Saturday night, and his Carolina Panthers had a brilliant season. He was sitting on top of the world but after being defeated in the Super Bowl his world crumbled. He did his post game press conference with a chip on his shoulder. Defeat is never easy or welcome, but there are winners and losers, and people have got to learn how to accept defeat. Some NFL commentators tried to excuse his behavior. They said he left before he said the wrong thing, but Newton is a grown man and he is capable of not spewing out anything that might torpedo his career. If Newton wants to be the face of the NFL he is going to have to develop a thicker skin. Peyton Manning has won the Super Bowl, and he has also experienced the agony of defeat, but he stood at the podium and answered the hard questions. If Newton is going to be the face he is going to have to learn how to do that too.

Warren Moon Says Cam Newton is the victim of “blatant racism”..is he right?

Heismann Trophy winner Cam Newton is getting severely criticized before he throws his first pass in the NFL. Last week Pro Football Weekly’s Nolan Nawarocki let loose on Newton. Nawarocki said of Newton “Very disingenuous — has a fake smile, comes off as very scripted and has a selfish, me-first makeup. Always knows where the cameras are and¬†plays to them. Has an enormous ego with a sense of entitlement that continually invites trouble and makes him believe he is above the law — does not command respect from teammates and will always struggle to win a locker room…Lacks accountability, focus and trustworthiness — is not punctual, seeks shortcuts and sets a bad example. Immature and has had issues with authority. Not dependable.” Does this sound like an unbiased assessment of a rookie’s talent or does this critique sound personal? Warren Moon knows how it feels to be a black quarterback in the NFL and he knows that they are not always given the leeway to progress at the natural rate of their white counterparts. “A lot of the criticism he’s receiving is unfortunate and racially based,” Moon told CBS Sports. “I thought we were all past this. I don’t see other quarterbacks in the draft being criticized by the media or fans about their smile or called a phony.¬†“He’s being held to different standards from white quarterbacks. I thought we were past all this stuff about African-American quarterbacks, but I guess we’re not.” Everyone knows Newton is no choir boy and he comes to the league with some baggage, but is the deck already stacked against him? Cam Newton’s Dad will not attend the Heisman ceremony, and why it’s a shame

Over the past few days in sports land they have debated whether is was appropriate for Cecil Newton to attend the Heisman ceremonies. Opinions were split because of the finacial deals that the elder Newton has been involved in yesterday Cecil Newton released this statement “For all of my fifty years of life, coupled with 25 years of marriage, I have made an exhausting attempt to be a good husband, father and generally a good person of integrity. The past 60 days have caused all that my family worked to accomplish to come into question. So that my son Cam Newton can receive all the honors and congratulations that he has worked so hard to accomplish without distraction, I have decided not to be in attendance at the ceremony as it will perhaps rob Cam and the event of a sacred moment.” This bothers me because by all accounts Cecil Newton is a good father and he made some serious mistakes, but he should be at the ceremony. Far too often we hear winners tout their mothers and make the heartbreaking statement that she has been bother a mother and a father because the father is MIA. It is nice to see a young black man with a family fully in tact and that should be celebrated. No I am not a Cecil Newton apologist, but I do believe that this father deserved to be at the ceremony. Tell me what you think.
