The Loneliness of a Black Republican

Recently I have been following Crystal Wright, Conservative Black Chick on Twitter. She is outspoken and I often disagree with her, but I must admit she does sometimes make some valid points. Read the linked story and share your thoughts.

I have nieces and nephews who are black Republicans and they are indeed lonely. I don’t have Republican friends and I know I cannot marry someone who is Republican, but I wish them the best.

Oftentimes I’m reminded of the theme song from “Hustle and Flow” when I think of the battle to educate blacks on the value of Conservatism to us as individuals and as a community. Yes, “It’s hard out here for a (black conservative)” sometimes. What do you do when you KNOW what you are seeing is wrong but 94% of people who look like you support it anyway? Melissa, I urge you to take the time to sit and have a cup of coffee with a conservative. Preferably a minority who’s a conservative, but particularly if they are a black conservative. Don’t pick a wild-eyed raging lunatic stereotype, pick someone who has your level of education, has a family, hopes dreams, etc. Ask them WHY they are a conservative and then listen. You say you could not marry someone who is a Republican but there’s no reason you cannot be a friend of one. I have mostly liberal friends from college. One or two I can discuss politics with, but the rest I stick to family, food, wine, gardening, certain comedies or historical documentaries. My own brother unfriended me on Facebook because after he posted a diatribe on eliminating private gun ownership I had the temerity to ask “well, how would you propose to go about doing this?” (Yes, I know, how “radical” of me….) He never answered but soon his feeds disappeared from my timeline. I have a motto: I never learned anything listening to an echo chamber. Find out what conservatives REALLY think from first hand interaction. You might be surprised at how closely Black American values mirror Conservative values.
