First Lady Obama will attend Hadiya Pendleton’s funeral…should she?

Michelle Obama will attend the funeral of slain student Hadya Pendleton. Obama is a Chicago native and Chicago’s homocide rate reached aan all time high last year, and so far this year 42 people have been killed. Some concerned citizens had created a petition asking the president to attend, but what would his presence accomplish? Some have asked why does the media carry extensive coverage of the Sandy Hook tragedy and vritually ignore the violence in urban areas? So is the White House bowing to pressure? What do you think? I think it is very likely the White House succumbed to public pressure. To the question of why the media ignore gun violence in urban communities, it is because violence in those communities gives lie to the narrative that strict gun control laws reduce gun violence. Many of the cities that experience the most inordinate rate of gun violence are governed by the most stringent anti-gun laws in the country. For the media to call attention to those cases highlights the fact that those gun control laws are feckless.

I think the more pertinent question is why do the liberal Democrats who run these cities refuse to advocate strict punishment against those same criminals who commit the crimes with the guns they so deplore? I submit that permitting these cretins to remain on the streets and continue to wreak havoc on the community so victimizes the inhabitants of these communities that they beg for the government to come in and abrogate their rights. Case in point is the call for “stop and frisk” by the citizens in Chicago and Jesse Jackson pleading for Homeland Security to patrol the streets of Chicago. This is exactly what the anti-gun powers to be want them to beg for. Many of these people are prepared to give up their rights for the illusion of safety.

The president ignores the situation in Chicago, which has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation, at his own peril. He wants to ban firearms that “look menacing” and only the law-abiding citizens will bother to comply. He will eventually have to acknowledge that his “feel good” measures are style over substance and if he really means it when he says he wants to make us safer he will have to get into the weeds of the issue and change our culture of violence and fill the void that happens when a generation grows up without strong father figures to teach the next generation how to resolve conflict without killing someone. He can’t do it alone, but he can sign legislation that encourages families, encourages marriage, encourages fathers to stay engaged in the growth and development of their children, encourages job growth, etc. etc.
