Miami firefighter Brian Beckmann’s Troubling Facebook Posting

Miami firefighter Brian Beckmann made some troubling and untrue statement about Trayvon Martin’s parents on his Facebook page. when initially questioned about them he said he was a private citizen with a right to say what he pleased, but days later he would not even confirm if he had actually written the offensive post. The department is now investigating wheter he violated any department rules. My question is should he be disciplined for expressing his opinions to his friends and family? Tell me what you think.

As a private citizen – well, he can be ignorant and racist, I agree. But he’s publicly identified himself as a firefighter, and it takes no great effort to trace back what he said. As a member of the public service sector, what he says when representing his department reflects on his department. He has betrayed the trust shown to him by the public, and he should be disciplined. I don’t know what the right punishment is – that would be determined after the disciplinary action. But if a man who’s responsible for protecting the public holds this reprehensible views, how much does that affect his judgment when in a life-or-death situation and he must decide whether to protect someone he already devalues?
