Has Shaunie O’Neal ever seen Basketball Wives?

I’ve admitted before that  I do watch reality television, and I watch VH1 Basketball Wives. It is a funny premise because the majority of the cast are not and have never been basketball wives, but that’s not the point of this post. This show is the brainchild of Shaunie O’Neal. O’Neal recently wrote an open letter on the CNN website about her effort to create an uplifting show:  “I have gotten both good and bad responses from viewers about Basketball Wives, and I certainly understand the opinion that the shows portrayal of black women is beginning to look somewhat negative. As you see on the show, I’m not a big supporter of the bickering, drink throwing and fighting, but when you put a group of strong, independent and vocal women who are going through or just came out of a bad relationship together, there’s bound to be a little drama. Let’s face it, we all know women like the ones on Basketball Wivesand countless other reality shows: Women who are vocal if you cross them. The problem for me is when black women are portrayed as only being that way and labeled different than their non-black counterparts for the same type of behavior. That’s when it becomes negative and damaging to our image. I’m not saying we have to create shows that only paint a pretty picture about who we are, but there should be a balance and most of all some integrity to the shows we create.” After watching this clip I can’t believe that O’Neal has ever watched her own show. Secondly, do you know any grown women that resort to fisticuffs to resolve a conflict?

Hello Shaunie my name is Renita from Naptown; I would like to let you know that I love your show I am a true viewer of your show. All I would like to say is that I do not understand how you put Meeka in the show. How she played a big roll in the show. As black women I do understand that we try to cut gossip in half and not entertain that. I do understand that she is a basketball wife but I never could follow/understand her roll on the show but TROUBLE. Meeka is nothing but a big trouble maker and I do feel that viewers love Tami and that she is the truth. I just want to let you know from my point of view yes it was wrong for Tami and Meeka to get into the altercation. But I also beleive that black women hate gossip and all you ladies seem to be real and true to one another. My point is if Tami leaves the show for next season I truely think that ratings may fall seriously. So if I had to chose as a viewer I would love to see Meeka leave over Tami. I am a true Tami fan.
