Should ABC have Andrew Breitbart doing political commentary election night?

ABC has announced that right wing blogger Andrew Breitbart will be offering political insight election night. Breitbart is the blogger that released a portion of Shirley Sherrod’s NAACP speech to the media this spring and set off a firestorm. He was condemned for theis act by people on the left and the right. My question is should Breitbart be on the ABC panel Election Night? Tell me what you think.

I think we should all agree to NOT turn on ABC on election night 🙂

In a culture that ostensibly places so much value on tolerance it appears that it is only virtuous up to the point where the expressed point of view runs contrary to the orthodoxy. The leitmotif that seems to be present in any controversy is the question of whether or not the subject involved should be censored, censured or flat out denied opportunity to participate in the discourse.

Andrew Breitbart aired video which was an actual recording of Shirley Sherrod’s comments. Was it an accurate representation of her comments? Yes. Was it presented in context? No. This is another of those situations where I believe it is up to the decision makers at ABC decide if Breitbart’s reputation and past public behavior is acceptable to them. Any viewer who finds his presence on that panel objectionable can vote with their remote and surf right past ABC.

When will it be “OK” for the media to use Breitbart? How long should they keep him in the doghouse? By now virtually everyone has forgotten who Shirley Sherrod is, and couldn’t pick her out of a lineup two out of three times. No, it’s time to move on. If he continues in his previous vein, he will eventually not get called on.

No more than I should be on ABC election night.

I think I shall write ABC. IF enough people act, they will find someone legitimate for the discussion. I”m sure someone will cry censorship

I have just learned that ABC has rescinded their offer to Andrew Breitbart to share his analysis of the election returns on Tuesday night. The point of view to censor Breitbart was shared by such notable iconic organizations as Media Matters, the Daily Kos, Huffington Post, Talking Points Memo and countless others.

I’m always amazed by those who apparently don’t have the intellectual prowess to support their ideas and are seemingly so threatened by the thought of competing in the arena of ideas that their first response is to shut down the opposition. For those in that camp congratulations!
