Did Sally Ride have a duty to come out of the closet?

The current Newsweek features the story “Out in Space” by Linda Hirshman. The story is about the late Sally Ride and how she chose to keep her sexual orientation to herself. Ride was the first US woman astronaunt and she was a lesbian, but she chose to come out via her obituary, and Hirshman seemingly was disturbed by Ride’s very personal choice. This is not the first article that I have read since Ride’s death that has taken umbrage to her decision to keep her personal life personal. It is sad that the writer felt the need to chastise Ride in death, but one has to keep in mind that 1982 was a far different time than 2012. The real question is does a celebrity have a duty to shout from the rooftop all of their personal truths? I think it is up to the individual and no one else. What do you think? Share your thoughts.
