“A Baptist pastor from Dallas who has endorsed Rick Perry introduced the Texas governor at a conservative forum on Friday in Washington, then later told reporters that Mormonism — the religion of Mitt Romney, Mr. Perry’s main rival for the Republican presidential nomination — was a cult. The pastor, Dr. Robert Jeffress, a senior pastor of the First Baptist Dallas megachurch, said that Mr. Romney was suspect on abortion and marriage, a conservative of convenience. Then he went on to say that it is the official view of the Southern Baptist Convention that Mormonism is a cult and that this was a factor in his decision to endorse Mr. Perry. “Mormonism is a cult,” Dr. Jeffress said. “Mitt Romney is not a Christian.”* So is it a cult? Last week I had the opportunity to talk with Tricia Erickson, author of Can Mitt Romney Serve Two Masters? Erickson says, “while he attempts to portray Mormonism as just another Christian Religion, Mitt Romney counts on his skills to shift our attention away from what he truly believes. If the American people knew what he truly believed, they would surely not place him in the highest office in the land”. Erickson is the daughter of a Mormon Bishop and she was privy to secret ceremonies that are conducted during religion services. She said as a child she knew there was something wrong with the religion, and as an adult she made the decision to leave the church. She still has relatives in the church. In her book she talks about the Mormons interaction with African-Americans. Initially they viewed them as the descendents of Cain and their dark skin reflected the fact that they were cursed. Chapter 5 of her book deals in depth with the tolerated racism within the church. Erickson’s also asserts that Mitt Romney believes the following: he will become a “god” in the afterlife, Satan is Jesus’ literal brother, The Garden of Eden will be in Jackson County, MO and Jesus was NOT born of a virgin birth. So is this a cult or is this just a religion? Tell me what you think.
