The answer is Yes. “Get ready for some brand new music at this year’s Super Bowl. No, we’re not talking about Destiny’s Child’s reunion during the halftime show — we’re talking about Alicia Keys’ rendition of the national anthem. “I have to rehearse it totally, as if it’s a brand-new song, because it is actually a brand new song in the style that I’ll deliver it,” she said during the Sundance Film Festival. “I’m actually rehearsing it like a maniac.”* So what do you think? Should an artist attempt an unsanctioned rewrite of the National Anthem? Share your thoughts. (My thought: not a good idea)

I am simply offended.
NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This isn’t a cover for the Rolling Stones or the Beatles. It is called the “National Anthem” for a reason.
If the words are the same, what does it matter? Part of what we appreciate about having superstars sing the national anthem is the way they put their own touch and own flair on it. I seriously doubt the change will be drastic enough for backlash. I think she’s probably just trying to do something fresh, stylistically.
If it is not sung with the authentic words and music, it is NOT the National Anthem! The NFL should be chastised for letting this happen. Political correctness prevents them from being patriots and REAL Men! You bunch of woosies!
Any American in their right mind should be VERY PISSED off right now!!!
Oh my… that’s gonna cause a big bruhaha. Maybe she will just sing it a bit differently. Not a good idea to go changing the National Anthem. Oh my.
NO WAY IN HELL
THE NATIONAL ANTHEM IS JUST THAT…. IT WAS WRITTEN 1 WAY AND SHOULD BE SUNG THAT WAY NO VARIATIONS NO ALTERED LYRICS SHE HAS NOT RIGHT TO CHANGE THE NATIONAL ANTHEM IF MS KEYS DOES CHANGE IT I ASK THAT ALL AMERICANS BOYCOTT HER MUSIC AND TO THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE GOING TO SAY SHE HAS THE RIGHT TO SING IT HOW SHE WANTS I THEN ASK YOU HOW MUCH OF AN AMERICAN ARE YOU ?
I have a few thoughts of my own too. I wonder if Obama being in office has anything to do with this??…Just sayin’
Oh Lisa, stop being a loyal American and get with the NWO. After all, Obama was put in the White House to end this American Experiment. It failed and is now time to usher in a new regime of Socialist Solidarity. Long Live King Obama. …..Wow, What a terrible nightmare.
Alicia Keys needs to mind her own business which is dull, every song sounds the same. It does not need anyting changed. Not a note, beat or anything else she was thinking of changing. KEEP YOUR BORING LITTLE SONG WRITING FINGERS OFF THE NATIONAL ANTHEM.
LOVE YOUR POST!!!!!
No one has even heard it yet! Why are we assuming that it will be some kind of unpatriotic slaughtering of the anthem??
Besides, if one’s patriotism is defined by a song, perhaps we have some more important questions to ask that have nothing to do with Alicia Keys at all.
That’s the entire point of the National Anthem. It was written as an inspiration. It’s intent is to stir the emotions towards what is most endearing of being an American, just as Francis Scott Key had felt that day in the War of 1812. The ethos of those eloquent words have long since been the galvanizing force of Patriotism in America. To alter it in any way is, as said, for one’s on personal gain. Much like Roseanne Barr’s retching of the National Anthem years ago, any change that dramatically changes from how it is written is not acceptable.
The thing that should take importance is the National Anthem and it’s words. Any altering of it is nothing more than the artist trying to draw the attention to themselves and selfishly pointing out that they are more important than the song. And it should not be lip-synced. I could even do that!
If I recall correctly, she did something similar a few years back at a basketball game. She mixed the National Anthem with “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” also known as the Black (or Negro, as it was termed originally) National Anthem. I thought it was totally inappropriate.
Couldn’t agree with you more
I agree with an earlier comment- BOYCOTT if she changes the National Anthem- Its bad enough if singers put the little tails of “look at me” on the end of the song- It was written, It is written, It should stay that way- What if someone changed her song and performed it to a televised audience??? hmmmmm
THIS IS HORSE SH*T!!!!!!!!! BIG MISTAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LEAVE IT ALONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How can you change something that was written by someone that was living it? Who are you to think you have the right? This isn’t a song off the radio! This isn’t your opportunity to make a name for yourself! She is a brainwashed illumnati puppet, aiding the destruction of our country!
Well said Tammy.
We have freedom of choice which means people can choose whether to support an event or not. If we dont agree with what is happening we can choose not to participate. If we feel that strongly then dont watch the superbowl. If it continues then dont attend or watch the sport. When ratings drop and profits are affected then attitudes will change or the event will cease to exist. We cannot complain and then continue to support what we are complaining about. If we do then what is the incentive to change? Support what you belive in and do not support what you dont.
Not true. The Liberal Left are few yet they have changed the workings of our governments, school. sports, and erased freedoms over the past 3-4 decades. For them to boycott anything during this time frame would not have amounted to much.
It’s our National Anthem. To “rewrite” it is disrespectful. It’s disrespectful to the people who died to give us our freedom. It’s disrespectful to our service men and women serving now. It’s disrespectful to America in general. She is a wonderful and talented artist..and I’m all for having your own style and covering songs to make them your own.. but NOT our National Anthem. I hope she’s boo’d off the stage!
She is just looking to get egged or worse. That is just asking for it.
Oh boy more “Urban Yodeling” .
Altering the words, meter or music is simply unacceptable. This is not something you “cover”.
I will wait to see the outcome before I say any more.
Some of the readers of this post are new here. So let me just say if you feel like cursing to express yourself you are at the wrong place. We like to keep the discussion civil here. The subject is rewriting the anthem not an opportunity to personally insult Keys. Let’s keep it civil people.–Ebony Mom Politics
I agree with 99% of the comments on here. It is the National Anthem of The United States Of America, that my dad, and many other dads, sons, daughters ,moms have fought to defend. Leave the song alone, if these ego tripping Diva wannabees can’t sing the song the way it was written, (music & Lyrics) then don’t sing it. Why do we need some of these “singers” to ruin our National Anthem? I hope everyone at the Superbowl in my city (New Orleans) boos this B-I-O-T-C-H off the stage!!!!
Remember that the music to The Star spangled Banner is an old English drinking song “To Anachreon in Heaven” she did a phenomenal job with it. Do you know what she did to change it? I do…….. :0)
