TIME has consistently emphasized that this award is totally detached from any achievement or lack thereof by the recipient. They characterize the issue the one that features and profiles a person, group, idea or object that “for better or for worse, …has done the most to influence the events of the year.” Being mindful that influencing events does not equate with accomplishing anything, I don’t disagree. It reminds me of the wedding ring that I gave to my wife; it’s a visible symbol of their love and adoration for him.
In fact, Time has usually picked the winning presidential candidate as Person of the Year for election years (most times since 1934 and every instance since 2000).
