I saw this story on NBC News last night. West Virginia is now offering free dinner to underprivileged students. Some of these students would not have dinner if not for this program. It is sad that this is their reality, but while viewing the clip I was struck by what one of the experts said. She said that she fears the students will not have “bonding time” with their families. That struck a cord with me because she is looking through her social prism and in her world and I would even say mine we do have the pleasure of eating together as a family, but in too many homes in this country their is no official dinner time. People are working all hours of the day and that is if they are working. Some people aren’t eating together because they simply don’t have anything to eat. So for the expert lamenting the loss of bonding time take heart the parents are probably thrilled to know their child had dinner that night.
