We all agree that President Obama had a bad night last night. He didn’t show the passion we expected, and he did even mention the infamous 47% Romney quote, but would you call him “lazy”? Romney surrogate John Sununu who has said the president needs to learn how to be American called him just that–lazy. Appearing on Andrea Mitchell show today he said the president was lazy and when she gave him opportunity to walk it back he doubled down on it. Next he will be calling him trifling, but we know there is no racial element in this, and if you believe that let’s talk about the bridge I want to sell you.

Tell me about that bridge that you have for sale. And while you’re at it, tell me if there is a racial element involved if a black man refers to himself as being lazy.
Bill I can always count on you to scour the right wing excuse machine and bring a clip that supports an insult against the president. The president is referring to the laid back lifestyle of hawaii and Sununu is attaking his work ethic. Two different notions. It is fine that you don’t support him, but please don’t justify these very personal and demeaning attacks.
I’m sorry. I should know better by now than to take the president at his word literally. But tell me how the right wing excuse machine got him to say that.
Bill please don’t be coy. I admit the president made the statement but we are talking context hear. Listen to what the president said and the context, and then listen to sununu he is saying something completely different. You know it and I know even if you don’t admit it.
If I tell you that the trait in myself that I deplore most is obesity and it is FROM overeating and consumption junk food when I was growing up, does that sound like I’m telling you the reason I’m overweight or engaging in a discussion about my lifestyle when growing up? I would be explaining why I’m fat.
Likewise, Obama told Walters that his laziness is FROM the easy laidback lifestyle of growing up in Hawaii. Does that not sound like an explanation of how the laziness trait developed? The conversation was not about the lifestyle of growing up in Hawaii. So what is your point about context?
I’m done.
I was travelling this week {without access to WIFI) when I heard about this statement. I just KNEW the race card would come flying. After all, we cannot say anything critical about THE ONE without it being a “dog whistle” comment that is “red meat” for the “Right-wing base” or some such nonsense. America needs to make up it’s mind. Either we hold EVERYONE to a high standard, issuing credit and fault where it is due, or we continue to tiptoe around minorities and subject them to “the soft bigotry of lower expectations” that President GWB talked about.
As far as the debate, President Obama commented that his people were “making” him study for the debate when he dropped by to deliver those pizzas. Maybe he was talking out of school, but he knew his words would be repeated (unlike Romney and his recent out of school ’47%’ comment) Nobody has to MAKE me do something I’m rip-roaring to do. I strap up, knuckle down, and dig in. Now we have two choices here. We can say that the president strapped up, knuckled down, dug in, role played, brainstormed, strategized, used the best resources available to him by his party to prepare for the debate–and got his (head) handed to him, or we can say he read a few executive summaries on the issues, blew off preparation, mailed it in, ignored his handlers and advisers–and got his (head) handed to him. Frankly I prefer to think the later.
