Why can’t a 300 pound 12 year old boy play Pee Wee Football?

A twelve year old boy who stands 6ft. tall and weighs 300 lbs wants to play pee wee football with his friends. The problem is the league has a weight restriction. the maximum weight is 135 lbs. His coach is appealing the rule and his mother also says he whould be allowed to play, but is this the big issue here? No the issue is why is a 12 year old boy 300 lbs? Sounds like a safety issue – for the other players. If he simply falls on another kid, he could seriously hurt him.

Given his height, this boy’s weight range should be 165 – 200 pounds. He is clearly in the severely obese category and really should be involved in sports activity. It’s great that he wants to be involved and natural that he wants to be with his friends, but he’s just too large to be safe. No matter how he got to be this size he is simply to big for this league. He may not want to play on another team but life is full of things we don’t want. We have to consider the needs of others. If I were the father of a 135-pound kid playing against him I would be among the first to insist the rules are enforced. The coach claims the weight limit is violated frequently, but I’ll bet not by this much.

I think you’re dead on in suggesting his mom’s priority should be his health and weight.
