FROM THE OBAMA WEBSITE
“Got a special milestone or event coming up? Instead of another gift card you’ll forget to use, ask your friends and family for something that will go a little further: a donation to Obama for America. Register your next celebration—whether it’s a birthday, bar or bat mitzvah, wedding, or anniversary—with the Obama campaign. It’s a great way to show your support for a cause that’s important to you on your big day. Just log in or sign up to build and customize your page—and congratulations!”
I know this is going to be a tough election, but this is simply tacky. You know my opinion now share yours.
The Obama Event Registry is just tacky

Wow! Something on which we can agree. It’s very tacky. Now for some disagreement. It’s no surprise to me; I’ll bet it is for you.
This is an act of desperation because contributions to the campaign have tanked. Many former supporters are now asking themselves “exactly what have they gotten that they want four more years of”.
I don’t understand how it’s tacky. Is it because it’s for a campaign? People ask people to give to an organization instead of receiving gifts directly very often.
I’ve even attended a funeral in which the family asked that money be donated to a specific organization instead of giving flowers.
A new and different approach in politics. Must say it is “creative”.
Your date & time is always 4 hours ahead of from where I’m located & sent this comment. Where are you? That would put you in the Atlantic Ocean or Greenland. Fess up, Joni! Your blog is great and I’m a faithful reader.
Sure, it’s tacky but first, this is what we’ve come to. Once the Supreme Court opened up campaign contributions with Citizens United, this is the kind of thing we open ourselves up to. This administration has to come up with everything they possibly can to get re-elected and money into their coffers. It goes back to the fact that we have to kill campaign contributions.
Second, a lot of this is done already for weddings and funerals and even Christmas gifts so the money is well-placed and serves a good purpose. It’s an outgrowth of that and a lot of us are concerned enough about this 2012 election that we’ll do this kind of thing.
Sorry Mo Rage, this issue has nothing to do with the Citizens United case. That case dealt specifically with corporate contributions to campaigns. This program is soliciting individuals to redirect funds to the Obama campaign that they would otherwise personally receive as gifts. I agree with you that they have to do everything they can to get money in their coffers. But this begs the question of why it is necessary for them to reduce themselves to use such threadbare tatics this around?
Considering the fact that money flowed so profusely into the campaign in 2008, I can only conclude many of those original donors have not experience the hope and change they were promised. I recently saw a bumper sticker on an automobile being operated by a white driver that said “I VOTED FOR OBAMA TO PROVE I’M NOT RACIST; I WANT TO VOTE HIM OUT TO PROVE I’M NOT STUPID”
