This morning I listened to the tv talking heads gush over the news of Miley Cyrus’ engagement. Cyrus is 19 years old and her family is said to be thrilled with the announcement. She has been dating this guy for 3 years so that means since she was sixteen. Ann Curry of the Today Show asked the representative from People magazine if 19 was a little young to be getting engaged, and the rep replied well Cyrus has been in the business for so long it’s like she is 29, but she’s not. She is 19 and this thing started when she was 16 and in some states this activity could be characterized as criminal. Cyrus is entitled to her own life and her own decisions, but let’s hold off on the confetti for just a little while. Cyrus is a grown woman, but most of us do not want our daughters to grow up this quickly.
Miley Cyrus Engaged at 19…why it matters?

I don’t usually giving a flying you-know-what about celebrities, but that’s why I think I’ll comment.
It doesn’t matter that she’s 19, BECAUSE she’s a celebrity. Her relationships are part of her celebrity status, and she might as well get a head start. She’ll be married and divorced, I suspect, quite a few times before she hits her 40s, and each one will put her back in the news.
We’re not talking reality here, people. This is all show, designed for our entertainment and to part us from our money.
What activity are you referring to that would be considered criminal in some states? I didn’t see the interview so I’m not apprised of the details. But I’m not aware that it is illegal for a sixteen year old to date even someone several years older in any state. What is criminal is statutory rape which, I’m sure you’re aware, is when a party under a given legal age engages in sexual encounters with someone older than that legal age. Was it disclosed during the interview that has occured?
