High school senior Anthony Cornist was a popular football player and when he walked across the stage to receive his diploma he was greeted with cheers from friends and family. It was a time of celebration, but the administration believed it was too much and Cornist has been punished. The school sent him a letter saying he has to do 20 hours of community service because of the excessive cheering. His mother has stated he will not be doing the community service. the school will not release his diploma until the community service is completed. What do you think? Is this fair or simply ridiculous?

Lawsuit. Cornist fulfilled the requirements for graduation and is being denied his diploma for completely arbitrary reasons. He is being punished for the actions of others, over which he had no control, and his family is being punished, over whom the school has NO authority. If he files a lawsuit (which he certainly should if the school’s actions jeopardize his entry into college), when he wins he will at least have money to pay for his education. The school administration should also be fired.
Lawsuit, always the answer. Here is the thing, all the students and the family were informed prior to graduation that there was a certain expectation for behavior. Why is it that everyone else seemed to understand and follow the request, so all would be able to enjoy, honor all graduating students. Do you really think that the Cornist family is the only family that had a reason to celebrate. We all have pride for our young people, we just find a more respectful way to show it.
All the students had to sign an agreement to limit excessive cheering and if violated would complete 20 hours of public service. His 20 hours could be remedieal reading. he is a prime example of a student shuffled thru the system. he can barely read!
I do not see where you are getting the information that all students had to sign something. That was not brought up in any of the articles. I believe that this is a ludicrous situation. I think in the end the community service will be dropped or something more serious will come towards the school.
from the article:
“Parents did know all this information up front,” she said. “They signed off saying I understand that this is what’s going to happen.”
Handler says the Cornists signed the agreement with the school to conduct themselves appropriately.
