Sybrina Fulton filed applications last week with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office that would trademark two slogans associated with the 17-year-old: “I Am Trayvon,” and “Justice for Trayvon.” The papers filed show that the mother wants the trademarks so the phrases can be used on “digital materials,” meaning CDs and DVDs. An attorney representing Fulton tells the AP that the trademarks will be used on “projects that will assist other families who experience similar tragedies” and that there’s no profit motive.” What do you think.

Unfortunately, that’s a necessity nowadays. She has to control what people do with her son’s name and image. If nothing else, it keeps people from using his name and image in NEGATIVE ways, like Trayvon hoodies and tacky shirts with him on the phone and the caption “Trayvon calling”. Believe me, people have already been thinking about doing this stuff.
