Is Soul Food Killing Black America?

The movie Soul Food Junkies is a project by Byron Hurt. Why do we love soul food so much in spite of what over indulgence does to us?About 3 years ago a friend of mine died from the effects of diabetes. He just could not give up cake, the sweet potatoe pies and the peach cobbler. When friends would admonish him regarding his bad eating habits he would simply laugh it off. How many people do you know that think they can eat anything as long as they take their insulin or their high blood pressure medicine? As we approach 2012 maybe it can be a chance to examine some of the food that you are putting into your body. I am not suggesting some ridculous resolution like I am going to stop eating all soul food. That’s not going to happen, but moderation might be something that can be considered. As I write this I am not just talking to you I am also talking to the woman in the mirror: Me. We can still occasionally enjoy peach cobbler, but let’s also add more salads and vegetables to the menu. We don’t want what we eat to become the death of us. http://www.nydailynews.com/opinion/columnists?columnist=Stanley+Crouch

  1. Same story for whites.
    I ♥ foods with fat.
    I have reformed, thanks to a caring wife, and a clinically 100% clogged artery
    Decades ago
    I’d buy an entertainment buy 1 get 1 book, and eat both meals;
    Eat an full pound of Swiss cheese during a 90 minute drive;
    Drink milk shakes made with ½&½;
    Eat an entire quart of Lady Borden ice cream;
    Hellman’s mayo direct from jar;
    Half an 18 oz jar of peanut butter;
    Get a hamburger at one fast food, then drive across street for another;
    Sliced raw potatoes fried in bacon grease;
    Chicken fried in cast Fe skillet using lard;
    I L♥VE fried chicken, especially Chester’s;
    I L♥VE bone-in pork chops;
    I L♥VE fried chicken wings;

    Down side is that one needs to eat and food is legal

    Today it’s lots of fruits and vegetables on a daily basis; whole wheat or whole grain bed , red meat rarely, chicken and wild caught fish (no fish from China), pork, arugula, spinach, squash, beans, healthy soups, lentils, bean of all types, cranberries, old fashioned oatmeal
    We need to add more greens, e.g. kale, for improved health.

    White folks are just as abusive to their bodies as blacks. Too many of us are lazy.

    Just typing this, and I could go for some greens, bone-in pork chops & sweet potatoes with butter.

    ☺ I wish Ms. Hudson-Reynolds would not have raised the subject. ☺; perhaps a peanut-butter/marmalade sandwich on wholewheat + glass of whole milk will help.

    It must be possible to make the foods we grew up with and love so much in a healthier manner. We can bake our chicken instead of frying it. We can use alternative sweeteners in our pies and cobblers. We can steam our greens instead of boiling the daylights out of ‘em and destroying the vitamins. Sweet Potatoes are actually more healthy than the Russets. Unfortunately we load brown sugar and butter on top of an already sweet vegetable. (I recommend cutting it open, baking it with a touch of cinnamon and nutmeg, and having it without the extra sugar. Delicious!) We can grill our pork chops–on the rare occasion that we eat them. I am sure there are cookbooks out there that show how we can do this. (where is the Oprah Book Club when we need it?) We can reform the foods we love and serve them in such a way that they do not kill us.
