Why did the White House schedule the jobs speech for next Wednesday Sept. 8th the night of the Republican debate? Speaker Boehner has suggested that the speech be moved to Thursday. At this point it is up in the air, but is this really worth an argument? The point is we need jobs so if the president wants to tell us his plans he can do it from the White House. This is a stupid argument that we don’t have time for.

They probably didn’t realize that the Republicans had a presidential candidate debate scheduled at that time. NOT!! It is an egregious display of the arrogance of this administration. Obama attempted to pull a power play and it has backfired; once again showing him as weak.
The jobs issue is very critical but apparently no so exigent that it was necessary to delay or postpone his Martha Vineyard vacation. But now it is urgent enough that Obama feels that he should preempt the Republicans’ long planned event.
This president is very petty and political and the needs of the country do not take priority over his political agenda. You wanted hope and change. You got it. Unlike anything we’ve ever experienced before from that office.
“Why is the White House Arguing over a date”?
Clearly you didn’t hear that the White House had actually asked John Boehner, first, if the original day and time was okay. Boehner had told them that yes, it was fine. Boehner then went back and told more Republicans this and they apparently shut him and the president down because it would take attention away from their stupid, pointless, one year too early debate. THAT’S WHY.
No president has ever had a request for an address to Congress turned down before. That’s another good reason.
Finally, President Obama wants to talk about jobs and creating jobs. That’s FAR more important than hearing the Republican candidates blather on now about what they’d do if they were elected.
The Republican Party shows, once again, that it’s all about them and not the good of the country. They also showed their priorities. Their number one priority isn’t help creating jobs for America. Their number one priority is themselves, no one else.
And the last thing they want to do in the next year is a) help create a healthy economy so that b) they help re-elect this president.
The White House knew the Republican debate was scheduled for the 7th when they asked for the date. A stunt is a stunt even when the people you support pull a stunt.
In May 2011 it was announced by NBC and Politico that a televised debate that had been scheduled for May 2 was rescheduled for September 7; long on the schedule before the president had apparently conceived his idea of his jobs plan. It would be hard to imagine that if not the president, at least someone among his handlers would have known of this scheduled debate. Can you cite your source for the assertion that Boehner initially agreed to the date and time and then subsequently reneged? This is the link for my source: http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/05/03/6578510-nbc-politico-debate-now-set-for-sept-7
No president has ever been denied a request for a joint congressional session and I would love if you could provide any evidence of any president having made such a flagrant attempt at such a power play.
The president wants to talk about jobs. He has done nothing but “talk” about jobs and ‘talk” every about other unresolved issue. That’s the one thing he is good at. He has pivoted to focus on jobs about nine times during his tenure. However, as I stated in my previous missive, the issue is not so urgent that it required postponing his vacation. You aver that creating jobs is not the number one priority of the Republicans and I assert that based on results thus far, it is questionable to me if it is the number one priority of the president.
Mo Rage-
Turn the tables. If GWB attempted to preempt the Democrats that were campaigning against him in 2004 I am sure you would have called it a “cheap publicity stunt to out maneuver the debate process of well-qualified candidates trying to get this country on the right track after four years of Republican mishandling.” Or words to that effect.
In Washington, the two major parties routinely defer to one another. During the conventions, both parties lay low the week the other is convening. It’s called “common courtesy”
BTW, if the president’s plan was so all-fired great, why’d he sit on it until September? Why didn’t he roll it out on August 29? August 30? August 31? Today? the silence is deafening….
