Why is the White House Arguing over a date?

Why did the White House schedule the jobs speech for next Wednesday Sept. 8th the night of the Republican debate? Speaker Boehner has suggested that the speech be moved to Thursday. At this point it is up in the air, but is this really worth an argument? The point is we need jobs so if the president wants to tell us his plans he can do it from the White House. This is a stupid argument that we don’t have time for.

Rep. Andre Carson says the Tea Party wants to see blacks “hanging from the tree”…is this kind of verbiage dangerous?

The Tea Party is radical and their goal is radical change in the federal government. During the debt ceiling talks they seemed content with the idea of the country defaulting if it furthered their political agenda, but do they want to see black people hanging on the trees? Do they want to go back to the days of Jim Crow? Recently Rep. Andre Carson said that the Tea Party wants to see “black people hanging from the trees.” This kind of dialogue is very dangerous and seemingly designed to inspire people with the use of scare tactics. Don’t get me wrong there is a racist element within the Tea Party and they might yearn for the good old days of white water fountains, but I can not use a broad brush on all of them and say they are measuring us for the next lynching. We need to mobilize and fight some of the punitive ideas that the Tea Party is championing, but let’s not go over the top and say they are itching for a lynching. Tell me what you think.

Why did Quantas Airlines Tweet this Offensive Picture?

Quantas Airlines has apologized for tweeting this photo. Why did they do it? It really does not matter. Did they think it was funny? Obviously they did, but I don’t. Tell me what you think.

ABC Receives complaints about Chaz Bono appearing on DWTS…is this bigotry or something else?

ABC has been receiving some flak for selecting Chaz Bono as one of the contestants on the upcoming Dancing With the Stars. Messages received via their message board:
HUGE HUGE fan of this show since season two and eagerly await each season to get my dancing/entertainment ‘fix’!! But when I heard that Chaz Bono was going to be on, I was sick. Not that I have anything personally again her/him, I just don’t want that lifestyle choice continually flaunted in the media esp ABC.”
“Chaz Bono How low can this show sink. Well you have certainly addressed the gay commuity. Guess this will not be a family show any longer!!!! Lost my family!”
“YOUR choice to bring Chaz Bono into the mix goes too far. I am not about to risk the potential for on screen dialogue about sex changes and gender confusion while my 7 and 9 year old are watching. If you want the “anything goes” hippy culture, then soon that is all you will get. You’ve lost us. In case any of you are wondering … no, we are NOT tolerant. We are not tolerant to allow any and all influences to come unfiltered into our home and especially to our children. This is truly a sad farewell.”

So are these the statements of bigots, or are they parents who simply loved watching the show with their entire family? Tell me what you think.

Dick Cheney is One Angry Man on a Mission to Rewrite History

Dick Cheney is on a media tour, but it also seems his primary mission is to re-write his own legacy. In the process it seems like he does not care who has to be sacrificed in his goal of re-writing historythe past. Colin Powell and Condeleeza Rice are two people that Cheney has singled out for criticism, but he has also taken some serious shots at his former boss, President Bush. He has proclaimed Powell as the man who had no opinion in meetings, but plenty of them when a mission failed. He recalls a time when Rice came to him “tearful” as she told him that he was in fact right, and he claims the president deferrred to his judgment when comtemplating the iraq War. I have heard pundits say this is Cheney’s opportunity to tell his “truth”. Truth used to have only one version but now we have individual versions and Cheney is on a mission to tell his. Cheney is a man that has suffered 5 heart attacks and he is now operating on a sophisticated battery pack. I would think that his thoughts would be heavenly bound instead of bound and determined to reshape the past.

NJ Teacher suspended for calling her first graders “future criminals” on Facebook…is suspension enough?

If you are in first grade and your teacher looks at you as a “future criminal” what chance do you have at getting a good education? Sure your parents have to be involved but if a teacher truly believes that her role is that of “warden” can she really inspire her students. “Veteran teacher Jennifer O’Brien said she posted the comments to Facebook because of her frustration that the students in her first-grade class are out of control, and she can do little about it. O’Brien came home from work, North Jersey.com reported, and expressed her genuine feelings after what must have been another tough day in the “blackboard jungle.” Wrote O’Brien, “i’m not a teacher — i’m a warden for future criminals.” Six hours later, North Jersey.com reported, she posted again, wondering why she couldn’t put her first-graders into a Scared Straight program, which introduces hardened criminals to youngsters. Wrote O’Brien, “They had a scared straight program in school — why couldn’t i bring 1st graders?” O’Brien has been suspended, but is that enough? Tell me what you think.

Bravo TV to do Russell Armstrong Suicide Special…they will literally do anything for ratings

Russell Armstrong committed suicide two weeks ago. He and his wife Taylor were castmates on Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. He had been rumored to have had money problems and marital problems that some say the televsion show used to their advantage. So now comes word that Bravo has decided to do a show that addresses the suicide. Really? This is simply beyond bad taste. This borders on dancing on the man’s grave. Can they simply get one more rating point from a dead man. Bravo took a lot of criticism from Armstrong’s family members and friends regarding the role the show played in his suicide. We will will never know why Armstrong took his life, but Bravo must feel like they have blood on their hands because besides ratings they might garner this is an attempt to clean their grimy paws.

The government is not your daddy…you’ve got to take care of yourself

I live on the East Coast so Hurricane Irene was a reality in my life this weekend. We secured the deck furniture, captured water in the bath tub in case we needed water for flushing, bought food that could be eaten without cooking, got the candles ready, purchased batteries for flashlights and filled our gas tanks. It is a long list, but this was our responsibilty. We were fortunate we did not lose power and our clean up was minimal, but there are still a number of people in our county that are still without power. Power is something you can not restore. Somebody has to do that for you so if you lose it you are at the mercy of the power people to restore it, but today I saw a woman on the local news complaining about her lost power. I could completely symphatize with her plight, but her next statement bothered me. She complained about the food that she had lost because of the power outtage, no fault of her own, but then she screamed that she was hungry. Who’s fault is that? Who’s fault is that you don’t prepare to take care of your own needs. Who’s fault is it that you have no bottled water, crackers or applesauce? Answer: it is not the government’s…the government is not your daddy. In case of emergency remember some things you simply have to do for yourself.

Is Drive thru Church the wave of the future?

How do you get people to come back to church? No one really knows the answer, but why do people stop coming? You hear all kinds of excuses: the pastor is always asking for money, the people talk about each other, I don’t have anything to wear are just a few. It is interesting that the same people who complain about the greedy pastor will spend their last dime at the mall, the nail and beauty salon or the tatoo parlor. The people who complain about the church members deal with all kinds of personalities at their jobs but they manage to keep on going and most churches are moving toward a more casual, relaxed look so you can wear just about anything to church. The linked article shows a church that has taken their services to a parking lot. Now people don’t even have to leave their cars to hear the good word. Do you think this would draw more people? Tell me what you think.
