Dr. Regina Benjamin is an accomplished physician. “President Obama has nominated Regina Benjamin for Surgeon General, but instead of people being totally psyched about her MacArthur genius award, her impressive charitable works, or her down-to-earth working-class background, everybody is trying to guess her BMI. Some people think a country plagued with obesity should not have an obese person representing our nation’s health care.” Would the question be asked if Dr. Benjamin were a man? Is it a valid question? We live in a society that a woman is classified as big if she is over a size 10. Does Dr. Benjamin look like the rest of America? The questions that should be asked is can she be effective in the job? Judging from her credentials the answer to the question is yes and that is why she was nominated.
