Will Women’s Groups Show Any Love to Michelle Obama?
Lately the issue of sexism is being discussed in the context of Senator Clinton’s defeat. Many of her supporters believe that journalists crossed the line in their coverage of Sen. Clinton. It was late in the campaign that sexism became the main topic of discussion. Katie Couric, anchor for CBS News has been an outspoken critic of her media colleagues. The women’s movement has been an effective advocate for Senator Clinton. Her surrogates were everywhere discussing the subject and keeping it on the minds of Americans. This past week Fox News did a story about Michelle Obama and the caption underneath read “Obama Baby Mama”. This was insulting on so many levels. It is part of the broader Republican attacks that are currently being waged against Mrs. Obama. Their hatred stems from the fact that Mrs. Obama is a strong advocate for her husband. Michelle Obama tends to speak her mind and occasionally strays from the talking points. The right has only attacked one other spouse with this kind of viciousness and that was Hillary Clinton. They have already promised that they will be targeting Michelle Obama. Will the women’s movement be as protective of Michelle Obama as they have been of Hillary Clinton? Hopefully they will show her the same love that they have shown to Sen. Clinton, but that is yet to be seen.
If the majority of women in the “movement” are as venomous as Hillary, I wouldn’t hold my breath. That’s why it’s great that Michelle Obama has plenty of women outside of Hillary’s pack to support her without question. Despite what the media has attempted to portray, Hillary Clinton does not represent all women.
